the Art of suffering well
Idaho 2026
“Being able to enjoy happiness doesn’t require that we have zero suffering. In fact, the art of happiness is also the art of suffering well” (Nhat Hanh, 2014).
In therapy, we practice “the art of suffering.” How to utilize suffering (hardship, resistance) in a way that increases capacity. How suffering and resistance are not bad. How they alchemize doubt and sorrow into greater strength, personal empowerment, and increased agency—the ability to make choices from your deepest desires, regardless of circumstance. Suffering is not in the way; it can become the way to compassion, steadiness, even deeper gratitude.
